It’s Dark Today. But Not Forever.

I think it’s important to make a point about all the articles out there, and what they are trying to say.

There are several prominent writers here on Medium and elsewhere who write horror story after horror story, screaming at you to realize that America is on the brink (if not already there) of Christofascism, Totalitarianism, Authoritarianism, and so many other things that your brain will melt.

If you read them, and their ilk, constantly, I guarantee you it will not motivate you, but you will feel so emotionally bludgeoned that you will barely be able to breathe.

Yet we’re doing that, because part of us can’t believe it’s really happening and maybe we have to pound it into our brains.

Look, yes, it’s as bad as they say.

Trump may get away scot free, and his cronies as well.

We will be fighting the war against the Christofascists and the StormTrumpers for many years to come.

We may even lose for a while, and they get to rule in the dark and the bonfires.

But this is not forever.

The Third Reich was not forever.

The Confederacy and its aftermath was not forever (even though it is trying its damndest to come back).

The Great Depression was not forever.

But in the midst of it all, it may FEEL like it’s going to be.

I think the key, for all of us, is to accept that we will be fighting this for the rest of our lives. This is not a fight won in months or a couple of years.

But don’t keep reading the apocalyptic screeds.

Read what is useful, garner what smart information you can.

Start getting ready to fight — mentally and emotionally, if not physically.

Find your tribe. PLEASE, I don’t CARE if you have always been a loner; you will NOT be able to get through what’s coming without others who will lift you and who will have your back.

Know who your family of choice is, who you can trust, who you want with you in the dark days.

And remember that even though the 30% of the wackjobs may take over the 70% for a time (as they did in Nazi Germany), there ARE more of us than them, and you are not only surrounded by traitors and madmen.

We are here for each other, if we know where to look.
