How to Discover Your Spiritual Gifts
A question I get all the time is “what am I good at? What are my spiritual gifts?”
Spiritual gifts can mean different things to different groups of people, which can muddy the waters.
In the Bible, for example, they call things like mercy, serving, leadership, discernment and speaking in tongues spiritual gifts.
So I’m going to turn it around and talk about “metaphysical gifts,” so we have a clear understanding of the difference.
Does everyone have a metaphysical gift?
Indeed they do — as long as they are open to it, and are willing to work on it.
The example I often use is that we all have ten fingers. Sit us in front of a piano and just about all of us can pick out “Chopsticks.” Some of us can even learn to play passably well, if we have lots of time to practice. But it’s a very rare being that turns out to have the talents of an Elton John!
So how do you find out what you’ll be good at? The same way that you would learn about any talent, metaphysical or mundane. You explore what you love, what you gravitate towards, and you try things out. And there will be some things that you simply know you can’t do.
Here are my own examples: I’m fascinated by pendulums. They are a great beginner’s tool for gaining answers from the energies around us. Holding a pendulum still, and then asking it questions will usually elicit a yes, no or not sure answer, based on how the pendulum swings.
I can’t use a pendulum. Why? Because I have a slight “benign tremor” in my hand. It means that my hand shakes ever so slightly when I try to hold it still. (My father had the same thing; it’s why he switched from planning to be a surgeon to being a cardiologist in medical school.) So I can’t ever quite trust what I am getting from a pendulum.
On the other hand, I slipped into doing past life retrieval like a duck splashing happily in a pond.
Why? Because of three ingredients I already had: I’ve been a professional actress, so I understand characters and storylines. I’m a writer and a storyteller. And, most importantly, I have always loved history and have studied many time periods.
That’s why, when I see someone’s past life, I can give them specific details: instead of simply saying “I see you in a long skirt and a big hat” I can say “I am seeing you in a hobble skirt, and a Merry Widow picture hat with ostrich feathers, and you’re standing in front of the Brandenburg Gate, which places this in Berlin around 1911–1912.”
So here’s your challenge…make a list of all the things that you love. Here are some examples:
o Are you an artist? Maybe spirit art is on target for you.
o Are you musical? Take a look into “toning,” crystal singing bowls and other methods of sound healing.
o Are you someone who always wants to help those who hurt? Then you might want to do a deep-dish dive into hands-on healing or other energetic modalities.
o Is every animal you come across wanting to be your best friend? Then animal communication might be right up your alley.
o Are you someone who daydreams and finds yourself doodling on paper when you do? Automatic writing might be your specialty.
o Do you “see” things happening far away and then find out you were right? Sounds like you are a remote viewing specialist.
o Do you love the stories that pictures can tell? Then Tarot or oracle decks are likely to be your tool of choice.
As you can see, you don’t have to do what everyone else is doing, and you don’t have to be good at every intuitive talent to be a valid Lightworker!
This year, make it a point to discover what you love and invite it to travel the Cosmic Roads of Knowledge and Service with you. After all, trips are always more fun when we have our favorite companions with us.
